Right click 'Open With' Command missing - Windows 7

The "Open with" right click context menu only appears if you have ONLY ONE FILE selected. If you have TWO OR MORE files selected, then the right click context menu no longer contains "Open With".

I found a few ways to solve this problem:

  1. Use the "Send To" context menu instead
  2. Add "open with" for multiple files back to the registry using a .reg file
  3. Use a 3rd party program to manage these options (and more)

SOLUTION 1:

(from howtogeek)
Use the "Send To" context menu instead.
- This seems to be a quick and easy solution. I added a shortcut to Photoshop and it worked like "open with" used to.

Changing the Send To Shortcuts. To get to the SendTo folder, you’ll need to open up an Explorer window, and then paste in the following to the address bar.

shell:sendto
This is a special value that actually maps to the real folder, which is found in C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo
You should now see a bunch of shortcuts, which you can modify or delete as you see fit. Fax recipient? Really? Sounds like a good one to delete.

Adding Items to the Send To Menu

Let’s say you wanted to add an item to the Send To menu to open files in Notepad. You could just drag a shortcut to Notepad into this folder, or create a new shortcut. Now you can see the new Notepad item in the menu:
This method should work for any application that allows you to open a file by using a command line argument.

SOLUTION 2:
Add "open with" for multiple files back to the registry using a .reg file- I did not test this but from the links it appears to work great and be perfectly safe

1. Click Start, All Programs, Accesories, Notepad.
2. Copy and paste this text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With]
@="{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}"

3. Click File, Save As, name the file "OpenWith.reg" (WITH THE QUOTATION MARKS) and click OK.
4. Now double-click OpenWith.reg, click Continue, Yes, OK, and see if the problem is solved.
P.S: My personal advice is not to use ANY registry cleaner on the system.

SOLUTION 3:
Use a 3rd party program to manage these options (and more)

- I did not test this but from the links it appears to work great and be perfectly safe.

chkds gets cancelled automatically on reboot - SOLUTION

ISSUE:
When the computer is booting up, black screen comes up and says it is running a disk check. But it cancels automatically before the time is up. No keys are pushed by user, it just cancels and boots. This solution for in my case, an MSI GT70 Dominator Pro Laptop running Windows 7.

SOLUTION:
1. Run msconfig
- Go to Start, type msconfig in the search box and in the results, click msconfig.exe
- Go to the boot tab and make sure that "no GUI boot" is NOT checked!  Save but do not reboot yet.

2. Run Command Prompt
- Go to Start, type “cmd.exe” in the search box and in the results, right click cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator. The black command screen with white text will open.
- Type, or copy/paste the following commands and press enter after each command:
chkntfs /d

chkntfs /t:0

chkntfs /c C:

chkdsk /r

EXPLANATION:
chkntfs /d
- this resets the chkdsk and autochk settings to default
chkntfs /t:0
- this sets the timer to 0 seconds...so things will run before they can be cancelled.
chkntfs /c C:
- tells it what drive to check
chkdsk /r
- look for and fix everything

Importing AutoCad 2d & 3d into Sketchup

Collecting pertinent info and links. Work in progress:

About flattening and cleaning AutoCAD drawings before IMPORT TO SKETCHUP
http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=43809

excerpts below
--------------------

Some Top Tips for importing dwg / dxf into SketchUp.
If you have Autocad........

1. If you are importing a 2d CAD file, run the FLATTEN command - this ENSURES everything is actually 2d.

2. Run OVERKILL command - gets rid of any duplicate data

(These 2 Commands are possibly Express Tool Commands).

3. Run PURGE command (most important Tip of the lot). Run PURGE again just to make sure !!! (PURGE ALL)

If you don't have Autocad, get the person who is sending you the file to do these 3 things.
.........
Hope this Helps
Bye

In AutoCAD, copy what you want to import to SketchUp to a new file. This avoids many import issues it seems - seems like old DWG files can contain so much stale data that you get more junk in SketchUp.
  1. Place everything around Origin
  2. Zoom extent - to ensure there is no stray objects far off
  3. Flip to a side view and check if some lines go up/down in an extreme distance. (I often come across drawings where lines shoot 50km into the air )
  4. Explode Polylines and 2dPolylines (If a polyline contains Arcs SketchUp will import them as straight lines from start to end)
  5. If drawing should be 2D, flatten to ensure it is.
  6. Purge All
I find even drawing over can cause problems, as you can still inherit some tiny fraction of inaccuracy - like slightly off angle that just mess up everything later on. If anything, I try to draw with the rectangle tool as much as possible to ensure proper 90 degrees angles.

I often turn on Edges Color by Axis after importing to spot lines that are off axis.

HIBERFIL.SYS and PAGEFILE.SYS space hogs:

Removing and/or reducing HIBERFIL.SYS and PAGEFILE.SYS space hogs:
When checking space on hard drives using WinDirStat or SpaceSniffer you may find VERY
LARGE hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys showing up taking up HUGE amounts of space.
- i limited pagefilesys from 2000 to 4000 (only on certain machines)
- i turned off hibernation using admin elevated cmd line
- I use system explorer, running always, to
have display of CPU and Memory usage in the task bar

- http://systemexplorer.net/ It’s FREE and awesome

PAGEFILE:
Go to Control Panel >System>Advanced System Settings>Performance Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory. Set it to "custom
size" and select a size (in MB).
Change drive location of Pagefile to use
both physical drives, less on the OS drive for better performance:

http://superuser.com/questions/237813/how-can-i-move-the-page-file-to-another-physical-disk-location

- Open “Command prompt” which you find in All Programs>Accessories
(run as admin)
type : powercfg -h off
then hit Enter. DONE.

- Excerpt: (If you don't do anything that demands loads of
RAM, since you have 12gb RAM, you could set it to a small amount (4gb or so) or
even disable it, depending on what you do or what applications you run. Worst
case, you disable it, and launch several apps or games, and get an "out of
memory" error. Just increase it and reboot.)

- Exploring options of changing drive location of Pagefile to use both physical drives, less on the OS drive for better performance:

HIBERNATION

TURN OFF Hibernation completely, removing Hiberfil.sys
after startup:

excerpt:
In case you want the hibernate function but not want it that back you can trim it to half
the size
First turn it off

powercfg /h
off

(you might
want to reboot here)

the turn it on with half the size (in percent)

powercfg /h
/size 50

Unfortunately you cannot go under 50%

The page
file size can be reduced by opening System Properties, by right click-ing my
computer, select properties. Select Advanced system settings, in the windows
called System Properties select Advanced, and click Settings to get Performance
Options and select Advanced again. Observe the current size of the page file
and click Change... . Default this is 1.5 times the size for large amounts of
memory. I set this to custom size of 2000 Initial and Maximum 4000

Windows duplicate file finding programs

NEEDS MORE INFO & CONCLUSION

http://www.howtogeek.com/200962/how-to-find-and-remove-duplicate-files-on-windows/

excerpt:

http://doubles.sourceforge.net/

Duplicate Files Finder is another barebones-yet-functional open-source application with a no-frills interface. It actually has a different approach from other applications. It looks for files that have the exact same size and only then compares them to see if they’re duplicates of each other.

This means you won’t get the almost-but-not-quite-exact matching features other applications provide. However, it also means that Duplicate File Finder should be even faster at scanning through a larger set of files. if you only care about files that are completely identical and not just almost identical, you can save time with Duplicate File Finder. It doesn’t have the prettiest interface, but it definitely works.

Compare & Synchronize Folders/Files - Free and pay programs

Revisiting the best software to install that will compare folders and files and allow for easy merging and syncing. Currently investigating Open Source options so i can install on all PC's and laptops as needed and keep things clean and organized.

I am most likely sticking with:

FolderMatch:

I have loved and used FolderMatch with much success, but it is pay and it periodically wants or requires you to pay for an upgrade. Doesn't cost too much to purchase($25) and upgrade($12). This program seems to be the most visually friendly and easy to understand so far. Been in this biz forever.

http://www.foldermatch.com/

they have a page listing competitor software which is a good list to investigate:
http://www.foldermatch.com/fmcompetitors.htm

Beyond Compare: Free trial, but costs about $30. Very nice and powerful. PRO version also.

WinMerge:

Open Source. "Differencing and merging tool for Windows. WinMerge can compare both folders and files, presenting differences in a visual text format that is easy to understand and handle." check site for last stable version. (winmerge 2.14.0)

FreeFileSync:Open Source. Cross platform

Some comments mention being cautious of bundled apps on install. Not sure if true.
